Query assistance for young users

In this demonstrator query assistance and search moderation techniques are employed to mitigate two of the main difficulties that young users encounter when searching on the web: The construction of the search query and the lack of appropriate content for these users. (More on children search difficulties on a large scale can be found here).

Query assistance is provided through query expansion terms mined from social bookmarking websites. These terms represent human expertise on moderate content for young users. Content filtering is provided through machine learning techniques. A careful interface designed is adopted to minimize information overload in the exploration of results.

This project was carried out along with the PuppyIR team. More details about this project and the contributions of the authors can be found here
