I have been awarded the degree of Phd (Cum Laude) after successfully defending my PhD thesis at the University of Twente on February 14, 2014.
My doctoral research took place under the supervision of Djoerd Hiemstra. My research focuses on understanding the way children and teenagers use search engines. I also have a strong interest in applying language technologies and machine learning to improve their search experience. Particularly, I have worked on query recommendation and resource selection. I have been part of the PuppyIR project, which aims to assist the creation of child-centric information access technology based on the needs of children.
Previously, I obtained my master degree from the Language and Communication technology (LCT) Erasmus Mundus program in Charles University in Prague and in the University of Groningen. In my master thesis I presented a system to retrieve Wikipedia entities from queries posed in natural language. You can take a look at the thesis here.
I obtained my bachelor degree from the National University of Colombia in Bogotá. During my bachelor I did an exchange visit at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. My bachelor thesis topic was in the field of bioinformatics (protein folding prediction).
